Inspiration from Majorca
A recent visit to the lush gardens of Alfabia near Soller in Majorca revealed all of the elements of successful garden design. Layers, framed views and lush planting was complimented by the ingenious irrigation systems and use of water, such a precious resource on the island.
I loved the symetry achieved via pathways, using both trees, shrubs and paving designs to lead the eye. The pergola featured an enchanting run of water fountains to both delight and cool in the baking sun. Lush planting was supported at various heights by metal frameworks creating highly prized shade around seating areas.
An incredible 400 year old wisteria provided much of the shade, its knotted trunk so gnarled and twisted that the root itself appeared to be a fantastical garden sculpture.
