Making an Entrance

Topiary provides strength and trees soften the architecture

This elegant Harrogate town house had been waiting for a garden revamp to the entrance way for some time, and what an entrance. The existing box topiary had succumbed to box caterpillar which was rife in the area and the owners contacted The Gorgeous Garden Co. to help with inspiration for the empty space.

The beautiful double fronted stone facade was imposing and sophisticated and required a light simple touch which would mirror the simplicity of the architecture whilst softening the edges. We used symmetry, height and focused on green textures and a restrained colour palette to fill the space without shouting. This allowed the architecture to remain the hero whilst being quietly supported by the solidity of the yew topiary. The elegant multi-stemmed Amelanchier delivers colour throughout the seasons with early, delicate white blossom, followed by black berries much loved by blackbirds, finally revealing stunning shades of red in Autumn. These will be gradually trained to into a parasol canopy, softening views from both inside and out.

Repetition of shapes and a blend of textures

Perennials are a support act to these key elements, offering evergreen ground cover from Pachysandra and Bergenia Bressingham White, long lasting flowers from the prettiest of white geraniums Geranium Sanguinium Alba and Anemone Honorine Jobert for late summer extension. Bulbs are yet to be planted for Spring but will be a combination of white Tulips and Alliums scattered underneath the canopy of the Amelanchiers to support their blossom.

A restrained pallette allows architectural features to sing

Jo presented me with different options and costings for the work. Her communication was excellent and she started work within the promised time frame. The work was completed so efficiently and the results are amazing. Cath - Harrogate
